About Google Arts and Culture
The mission of the Google Cultural Institute is to bring the collections of the world online and accessible to everyone who has a web browser.
What is the Google Arts and Culture Collection?
Their collection is divided into three areas: 1) art, 2) history, and 3) wonders. I am not sure how many pieces are in their collection, but click around and see it for yourself.
Here is a collection of "California State Archives" from the site. Each of the images has a high-resolution download. There are also 360-degree videos (https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/beta/project/360-videos), street view videos, and high-resolution pictures.
Publishing Images
Google will let you use images from their Google Arts collection on your website, through Chromecast, even on Google Cardboard.
Art Talks
If you have a question about an art piece, you have a way to talk to the art curator or director through an Art Talk. "Art Talks are live-streamed videos that are broadcast on our Google+ page. Viewers are welcome to ask questions in real time and share their comments with the community." On the site, you can look at the calendar for future Art Talks (which are actually Google Hangouts with a dial-in number. (link: https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/about/partners/art-talks/)
Art Tours
Take a look at this exhibit at "Robben Island", which was the South African prison Nelson Mandela was placed in. Click the link and go through the prison, listen to conversations with other prisoners, and look at the prison from space. The type of exhibition brings his struggle to life through words, sounds, and videos at the location of the prison.
