Reader, #ThingsOnlyChristianWomenHear tag on Twitter is throwing down some truth. And you ALL need to go look at some of the responses. Author, Sarah Bessey started a much-needed conversation, on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. The hashtag linking it all together is #ThingsOnlyChristianWomenHear, and the experiences women are relating are heartbreaking, and sadly point to a divisive rift in the church.
I think it's a conversation that's worth having simply because misogyny has been rampant in the church since its very inception. Some say if you don't believe it, read the not-so-subtle misogyny in the writings of one Paul from the New Testament.
Christianity isn't necessarily the first, nor will it be the last of its kind to do this. Religion, in general, has been used across humanity, across history, to subjugate 50% of the population in the name of God. If you somehow feel offended by the 'Christian' component of this hashtag, you're missing the point.
Bessey is known for pointing out what she believes are misogynist practices in the church. An egalitarian and feminist, Bessey pulls no punches in her writing. In her book Jesus Feminist, she writes: “I look forward to the day when women with leadership and insight, gifts and talents, callings and prophetic leanings are called out and celebrated as Deborah, instead of silenced as Jezebel.”
