If there is one thing I have learned in my 30 years of marriage it is this--listen to your wife because she is usually right! It has taken me a while to learn this and I still sometimes forget to follow this simple truth and suddenly realize that I could have saved myself time and aggravation if I just would have listened to her in the first place. This usually takes place in the car as we are driving to a destination that is unfamiliar. I think I have a pretty good sense of direction, but my wife has this other-worldly, almost psychic ability to sense where to exit a freeway she has never been on at just the right moment. Being the man that I am, I refuse to bow to such simple navigational techniques and become bound and determined to prove that I am right. This always results in me uttering the words, "I guess you were right."

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." As we are going down the pathway of life, it is so easy to put our trust in our own instincts. We come to intersections and forks in the road and instead of asking God for direction, we go where we think is best only to find out that we got off course and have to ask God to get us back on track. We realize that if we would have just simply asked Him, He would have shown us the right direction and saved us the trouble of going down the wrong path. His direction doesn't always make sense to us, but we must remember that He does know best. When we lean on our own understanding we just end up on some winding, confusing road leading nowhere.

When we lean on His understanding, Proverbs 3 tells us that He will make our path straight. In other words, we will be on the right track and won't have to take detours trying to find our way back to His pathway for us. Just like with my wife, we realize that He was right all along. But also like my wife, He doesn't say anything. He just patiently waits for us to swallow our pride and ask Him for help. He doesn't chide us for our stubbornness, He simply points out the way.

Wherever life is leading you today, make sure your trust is in the right place. It will save you a lot of time and aggravation. It also makes the trip much more enjoyable.
