The Blessing

      The Blessing

The wordings of all the blessings and all the formal prayers we say throughout our lives come from our Fathers, or from the Prophets, or from the greatest of our sages throughout the ages. Much of it is repeating what is written in the Torah. But of all these words we have been saying for thousands of years there is only one blessing that Hashem Himself told us what words to say when asking Hashem to give that blessing;[i] "…thus shall you bless the children of Israeli; say to them;" the Blessing of the Kohanim; the priestly blessing.

In Israel we receive this blessing every morning, outside the Land only on the Holidays. (Another good reason to move to Israel) Knowing that Hashem told us what words to say makes these words unique and by studying them we should be able to learn more about Hashem's best desires for us.

There are three lines in the blessing:

"G-d bless you and guard you.

G-d shine His countenance upon you and be gracious to you.

G-d turn His countenance toward you and grant you peace."

[i] Numbers 6:24-:26
