Tarot Card of the Week, April 3-9, 2017: Page of Pentacles

We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community… Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.
Cesar Chavez

In this time of roller-coaster economic news and several important retrogrades affecting us this week, let us welcome the Page of Pentacles!

In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, this card shows us a grove of trees, a newly plowed field, and the Page standing in a meadow of flowers. Just like these first days of Spring (in the northern hemisphere), it would seem that he is in transition, in a period of possibilities.

In the distance a lofty peak beckons, yet for now, the Page is focused only on his Pentacle coin, which is almost floating in his hands. Is the coin simply the same color as the sky background, or is it instead transparent?

The Pages in the Tarot are often messengers, or catalysts for change. They may also be actual people, usually youthful in outlook or literal age. Though inexperienced, they exude the potential of the suit, personified.

The Pages may also indicate important dealings with an actual child (male or female), our own inner child, or simply a new, “beginner’s mind” perspective. They also can indicate taking risks.

However, with Earth-ruled Pentacles being such a slow and steady force, risk-taking in this suit is more about planning and manifesting, than recklessness or impulsiveness. We should therefore be on the lookout for important news about money, land, investments, and jobs.

This is also a good time for improving and expanding our physical well-being, perhaps with a new health regimen, or by finding new ways to celebrate our relationship to the natural world.

Mercury, Venus, and Pluto, Oh My!

As long-time visitors to my blog may recall, I spent several months a few years back discussing the energetics of money and the spiritual meanings of Wealth.

In part, this was inspired by Pluto’s 2008 transit into the sign of Capricorn, in almost perfect timing with the economic crash. Because that’s what Pluto in Capricorn can do.

Until January 2024, the planet that represents the soul’s darkest shadows, as well as death, destruction, and transformation will continue to grind away in the sign of all that normally is stabilizing – our governments, our religious institutions, banking, and even our very definition of wealth and money.

In addition, the journey to the Underworld that is the hallmark of Pluto transits is being experienced by the United States, as we creep through our “Pluto return.”  My friend Lynn Hayes has much to say about this topic, and I highly recommend you seek out her articles on the subject, starting with her most recent.

As the Plutonic energy continues to change our world, the Page of Pentacles’ visit this week suggests that we make wise, long-term choices about the things that nurture us —  like health, wealth, and the very planet we call our home. (Hint: it’s not what we are being told and sold by commercial interests).

In other astro news, Venus is currently retrograde, and will square Saturn on April 8. My other dear astrologer friend, Elisabeth Grace, writes, “Let us be mindful that Venus (love, money, women, art, social expression) will be heavily challenged by Saturn all this month, playing the role of a brick wall or a demanding schoolmaster.”

Again, this particular Page visit is helpful, for he is naturally cautious with his assets. This is a period to be conservative with your money — at the very least, until Venus stations direct next week.

And speaking of planets in retrograde, get ready for both Saturn and Mercury to station retrograde this week.

As the lord of karma and boundaries, Saturn’s retro suggests we will be getting lessons about the wise use of time and our work commitments. We may even need to back out of some projects, especially if we realize we should have turned them down in the first place.

Perhaps the Page of Pentacles is considering similar matters. Let him be your guide as you scrutinize everything on your plate, or if you need help restructuring and reorganizing what supports and sustains you.

In addition, starting this Sunday, the 9th we are headed into a Mercury retrograde (here’s an article from a few years ago.) If you’re like me, you’ve already been feeling the “shadow” period in advance.

Since the planet that rules travel, communications, business, and technology is currently in the Earth sign of Taurus, be sure that you take care of practical matters like double-checking travel tickets and plans, car maintenance, and data backups. It might also be wise to have an up-to-date appraisal of your valuables.

The Page of Pentacles reminds us to SLOW DOWN. Only then can we see with clarity what our real, sustainable assets are.

The Transparent Coin

What do you consider to be your most important resources? Take inventory of what supports you, and how that can be invested to bring long-term gains. What goals around work, finances, health, and home are important for you, in this season of new growth?

The Page of Pentacles heralds possibilities and a fresh new approach. Drawing upon the Pentacles’ steadfastness and stamina, it is time for us to claim the stewardship of our rightful prosperity. He invites us to know and wield with careful consideration the power of our abundance.

Few would disagree that many of the global economic pressures we now face can be linked to a lack of transparency and honesty from those to whom we have entrusted our planet. It is long past time for those who command the global economies to hold the wealth as this Page does — gently, thoughtfully, and with a focus on the long-term.

What is success? What is true prosperity?

The Page of Pentacles would suggest that the greatest measure of wealth is not how much we might hoard or display, but our ability to be generous with others.
