Rosh Chodesh Ellul - Who is G-d

BS"D

Since Teshuva is essentially a process of getting closer to Hashem (G-d in hebrew), it occurs to me that I should define for myself my beliefs and assumptions about Hashem.  So here goes.

1) Hashem is the absolute totality of the universe, without begin or end, independent of time and space

2) Hashem chose, and continues to choose to create us

3) Hashem is absolutely merciful, and everything he (ultimately Hashem is beyond gender but I use he here for convenience)  does is ultimately for good, even if we are unable to recognize that due to our limited consciousness.

4) We have the ability to connect with Hashem in as deep a manner as we allow ourselves.

5) Hashem does not have any unrealistic expectations of us, and recognizes when we are doing our best.

6) Hashem wants us to be successful,

7) Hashem wants us to have satisfying and happy lives.

8) While Hashem has a special relationship with the Jewish people, I believe that this doesn't imply an inherent superiority.  Rather, the Jewish people have a special responsibility to the world.  It is quite likely that other peoples have their own special responsibilities.  Any superiority we have, is only because we earn it, by being a light to the world.  If we cease being a light, then we lose any specialness we have.

9) Hashem loves of his creation.

10) So to speak, Hashem gets the greatest pleasure in bestowing good on his creation.

11) Our biggest task is to reveal Hashem's presence in the world in as open as way as is possible.
