Jesus as wonderful counselor

Memorise: “Where no counsel is, the people fall; but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety” (Prov 11:14)

Read: Proverbs 19:20-21

By Pastor Enoch Adeboye

Isaiah 9:6 calls Jesus the Wonderful. Another reason He is so named is because there are certain situations or events that ordinary strength, understanding or ability cannot contain. At such a time, He can bring to bear His infinite supernatural strength, wisdom and ability. In that situation which appears above your understanding or ability, the Wonderful will enter in and give you beyond your heart’s desire in Jesus’ Name.

In Daniel 6 , the whole world thought an end had come for Daniel. That night, those behind the plot were celebrating their feat in getting the king to do what he never wanted done. To them, Daniel’s relevance had ended that night. But unknown to them, Daniel communicated with the Wonderful.

By the following morning, the world awoke with open mouths to see Daniel alive. Not only that, those who plotted against Daniel became food for the lions. Anyone who is plotting your fall shall encounter the Wonderful today and end up in the belly of lions.

Another name the Lord is called in Isaiah 9:6 is Counsellor. A counsellor is the one you go to when you do not know what to do next. Counselling is very important in the life of every believer. Counselling may be required before every crucial decision is made. The quality of decisions you make will be determined by the strength of advice received.

The quality of the advice you receive is a function of the experience and training of your adviser. There are good and bad counsels. Psalm 1:1-3 forbids believers from receiving counsel from unbelievers. If you make an unbeliever your adviser, he may cause you to go astray in the name of advising you. Psalm 106:43 says whenever you take advice contrary to God’s Word, you provoke God to work against you.

For instance, when you are advised to go into premarital sex with your partner in order to test her ability to bear children and you take it, you violate God’s Word that says, ‘Thou shalt not commit adultery’. As a consequence of this, you will be humbled by God’s judgement. Yet, Proverbs 20:18 says good counsels are the building blocks of any successful plan.

In fact, without it you may not succeed in that plan, project or assignment ( Prov 11:14). Do you know you require counselling to succeed in business, academics, ministry, family, career, etc.? This is why you need to know Jesus as The Counsellor. To what extent has He revealed Himself to you as the Counsellor?

Until you cut off from ungodly counsels and counsellors, you may never experience Jesus as the Counsellor.
