Be ye therefore perfect, even as your father which is in heaven is perfect – Matthew 5 vs. 48

  1. Jesus listed various criteria for making heaven, and these include the poor in spirit- verse 5; pure in heart- verse 8; and those persecuted for righteousness- verse 10.
  2. Jesus also listed qualities of good Christian, which are meekness- verse 5; merciful- verse 7; and peacemakers- verse 9. How do you fit with these qualities?

  1. Jesus also symbolically describes Christians as the Salt of the earth- verse 13. Salt purifies, seasons, tastes, invaluable, cleanses, and heals. Are you a salt or one of the pollutants of the earth?
  1. Jesus also symbolically describes Christians as the Light of the world- verse 14. Light gives protection, peace, direction, clarification, dries wetness, provides energy, and clears our darkness. Are you a source of light to the world, or your work is reinforcing darkness in the world?
  1. Jesus also taught that he came not to abolish the mosaic old testament laws but to fulfil them. Verse 17. We need spiritual direction in interpreting the mosaic laws in the light of the new testament revelation that Jesus represents.
  1. You can’t make heaven by being religious. For instance, the Pharisees pay tithes religiously. You need to do pay more than tithes by faith not as a form of a tax, to fulfil rigorousness. Matthew 5 vs. 20 – For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
  1. Anger may deny some people a place in Heaven. Don’t be angry without a cause , and be quick to forgive.

Matthew 5 vs. 22 – But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

  1. Your prayers will not be answered unless you forgive those who have offended you- verse 23.

Vs 23-24: Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against Thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

  1. Abusive: Let no uncouth, insultive or abusive words come out of your mouth. Don’t curse, don’t abuse, don’t say you are a fool

  1. As much as possible, avoid issues that will take you to Police station or the Court of law. Resolve issues amicably as soon as possible- verse25

25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

  1. Lust is adultery of the heart. If you lust in heart after a woman, you are in danger of losing heaven

Matthew 5 vs. 28 – But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

  1. Cut off from every ungodly relationships or friends-verse 29 and 30

29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell

30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

  1. Divorce not allowed unless on the basis of Adultery: If you divorce a man or woman unless on the ground of adultery, you have committed adultery

Matthew 5 vs. 32 – But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

  1. Integrity: Be straightforward. Be a man of integrity, Be a simple man.

Matthew 5 vs. 37 – But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

  1. Vengeance: Don’t take revenge- Matthew 5 vs. 40 – And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.
  1. Love your physical enemies- verse 44. We must understand the enemies Jesus is making reference to are physical enemies who offend you in day to day life rather than spiritual enemies described in Ephesians 6 vs 10. Love everyone, both friends and foes – Matthew 5 vs. 46 –

43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

  1. The most important requirement for making heaven is perfection. Be perfect – Matthew 5 vs. 48 – Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

  1. Repent and be saved: Repent ye and be saved-Mathew 3 vs 2
