Live in the Present

Do you take on unnecessary worry? Sometimes we can tend to focus on things that don't matter in the present moment, of the past, or of the future. These moments come and go, but the time we spend obsessing over things we can't control, or tasks we burden ourselves with when the present moment is more important, pull us away from the precious gift of life God gives us. Mind you, we all Worry, we all have a list of things that we feel needs to be accomplished before we can take time for rest, for silence, for enjoying the moment at hand. For me, just the idea of a busy week ahead makes me want to have everything I can ready prior to the start of that week, clothes included. For some, worry can be overwhelming to the point where faith becomes lost. The cure to worry is faith, hope, trust and a dedicated prayer life, where we allow God to take control of every second, as it should be. What are some areas you worry and lose sight of the present moment?
Today's Gospel states: 'Now as they went on their way, he entered a village; and a woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her" (Luke 10:38-42).
Today's reading talks about Mary and Martha, two different personalities of what it means to live a life of faith and disciple ship. Martha is worried about making preparations for Jesus' stay, doing everything she can to be accommodating. However, she doesn't once sit and listen to Jesus' teachings, as Mary does. For some this may sound absurd, especially if you're a hostess often. Jesus isn't saying that this personality is wrong, being a disciple who moves and helps is greatly rewarded. However, if we are always moving and looking to help others, we are not taking the time to listen, to be silent, to take in the present moment and listen to what God is calling us to do. I am definitely a Martha, needing more time to balance and take time to listen, for silent prayer. Are you a Mary or Martha? Take some time to ask God to ease the worry of what can't be controlled, and ask Him to help you focus on His will for you in the present moment.
Today we pray:
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the gift of life to learn and love more about my faith and my place in life each second of the day. Help to ease the worry of things I can't control, and help me to live in the moment. Let me discern Your will and take time to truly listen.
I pray this in Your most holy name, Amen.
