Archaeological discoveries at the site of ancient Sodom seem to suggest that a meteor air-burst at around the right time destroyed the city. To get an idea of how that works think of something like this that happened in Russia in 2013.

The evidence includes rocks that had been melted together and pottery that was melted into like glass but only on one side. Basically this ancient city was destroyed by something that did directional damage (so not an earthquake) and by something that produced incredibly intense heat for a short space of time (the heat damage is shallow suggesting it didn’t last long).

After this event the agricultural area around the city becomes infertile because of an increase in salt and sulphur. So the city cannot be rebuilt because the surrounding land cannot support animals or crops.

And if we read Genesis 19:24-25 we see the Bible says this:

Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land.

Sulfur, fire from above, the Destruction of a city and land made infertile. Science once again has caught up with Genesis.

Now this is not a nailed down fact yet, some people think Sodom was located somewhere else or that the timing is wrong. But the evidence that a meteor was the cause of the destruction of an city that is one of the contenders to be Sodom is something that has to be take seriously.

The Bible is interesting from a historical perspective, because it sometimes interweaves actual events from history with the Christian mythology.

Now that it seems reasonable that a meteor airburst did destroy the area that may have contained Sodom, we can lay to rest the idea that the Christian God sent down fireballs to punish homosexuality.

It looks like once again, it was a perfectly natural event that led to an apocalyptic, mythological story, and that what people once attributed to Gods and Goddesses is just nature.

If God can use foreign armies, locusts, famine and plagues to judge nations for their sin I don’t see why he can’t use fireballs.
