Devotional: An ever present helper

…the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. John 14:26

Sometimes when I think of the Holy Spirit, I only think of power, miracles and gifts of healing, or prophecy, etc. But there is another side to Him too. The Holy Spirit is also a Helper. A teacher. One who reminds us of God’s word. These characteristics don’t seem very glamorous, they could almost seem a bit mundane. Didn’t the Spirit come on the day of Pentecost in tongues of fire? And here Jesus is describing Him as someone who reminds us of things. But I need this aspect of the Holy Spirit too. I need a helper, someone always with me, bringing God’s word to mind. And this can be just as life-changing as some of the gifts of the Spirit that we might get more excited about. At times, this quiet, unseen work of the Spirit has brought me peace when nothing else could. When something like this happens, it is just as much the Spirit at work as when we see spiritual gifts poured out. All of it points to Jesus, all of it glorifies God.
