Open thread: Should Zach Zenner get more carries this week?

The underdog made another good impression last week. Time for some more opportunities?

One of the nice revelations during an otherwise tough game to watch was Detroit Lions running back Zach Zenner. In the fourth quarter of their win over the Arizona Cardinals, the Lions deployed Zenner in their backfield and it was extremely effective. In the final quarter alone, Zenner had 11 rushes for 52 yards and the game-sealing touchdown. Most of Zenner’s yards were hard-fought and he ran with the kind of decisiveness that we rarely see out of the man he replaced in the game, LeGarrette Blount.

Zenner has always been a fan favorite for his tough rushing style and his feel-good story. Everyone always likes the underdog, but while Zenner has often made the most out of his opportunities, he’s still a career 3.7 yards per carry type of player.

But with Kerryon Johnson still on the mend, it looks like the Lions will have a choice next week against the Bills. Today’s Question of the Day is:

Should Zach Zenner get more carries against the Bills?

My answer: I don’t have a strong feeling either way. I do like the way Zenner runs as compared to Blount, but I don’t necessarily think he’s all that more effective. He’s certainly not good enough to be a feature back, but at the same time, I don’t think Blount is, either.

I’m fine with the way the Lions used him last week: as the guy to punish the defense once they’re tired. However, if the team wanted to give him a handful of more Carries, I’d be okay with that, too. They already know what they have in Blount, and while Zenner is a pretty well-known commodity at this point, it doesn’t hurt to give him another opportunity to see if he’s got anything else left to see if he’s worth keeping around in 2019.

I still think Detroit should be in the market for a different No. 2 back behind Johnson for next season, but no harm in giving Zenner an extra three or four carries while their feature back is still working through his injury.

Your turn.
