Report: Lions sign Jim Caldwell to multi-year extension

Jim Caldwell has reportedly signed on to be the Detroit Lions’ coach for a few more years.

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell entered the 2017 season with a lot of questions about his long-term job security. By all accounts, it appeared he was on the final year of his contract, and many believed 2017 would prove to be a make-or-break year for the veteran coach.

However, it appears Caldwell’s job security wasn’t the subject of much questioning coming into this season. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Caldwell had already signed a multi-year extension with the team, dating back at least a few months ago:

This comes as a pretty big surprise. The Lions are off to an impressive 2-0 start, but this extension reportedly happened well before the regular season. Many believed that because Caldwell wasn’t hired by current general manager Bob Quinn, his job security was tenuous at best.

Obviously, the extension doesn’t necessarily mean Caldwell will be around long-term. If the team struggles, they could always decide to part ways with him, but this is the first tangible sign that Quinn is fully in Caldwell’s corner at the moment.

Caldwell is currently 29-21 during his tenure as head coach of the Detroit Lions.
