Did Saturday’s game ease your worries or make you feel worse?

The Detroit Lions defeated the New York Jets 16-6 on Saturday night to move to a meaningless 2-0 record during the preseason. While the win itself doesn’t matter, the way in which they played is important, because it highlights potential strengths and weaknesses.

The Lions’ performance in the first half—for the second week in a row—showed a clear separation in talent level between them and their opponents. The Lions have now scored a total of 30 points in the first halves of their games, while only allowing three.

But there were concerning things about game, too. Detroit’s first-string offense took a couple series to get their feet out from underneath them, and they couldn’t establish a running game for the entire game.

So with the good and the bad clearly on display, today’s Question of the Day is:

Do you feel better, worse, or the same about the Detroit Lions after their 16-6 win over the New York Jets.

My answer: Either the same or a little worse. For the second week in a row, I can’t put too much value into the Lions’ defensive performance. While it’s true the Lions made some pretty bad quarterbacks look good last year, none of them were as bad as Scott Tolzien and Christian Hackenberg. I need to see the Lions play a starting-level quarterback before I go declaring the defense improved.

On offense, I thought this week was a small step back. I’m not at all worried about Matthew Stafford, who looked like the same quarterback from last year. But the offense line and running game look no better than they did last year. That comes as a huge disappointment considering the heavy investment Bob Quinn made in the offensive line this offseason.

Obviously, there are a few caveats. First, the Jets defensive line is legit. If there’s any strength on New York’s roster, that is it. Additionally, the Lions are still battling through some injuries, with Taylor Decker likely gone for another two months and T.J. Lang only now coming back from hip surgery.

Still, this is an offensive line that many believed was going to be a strength of this team, and they’ve been tossed around in both games pretty handily. Ameer Abdullah will bring some pizazz to the running game, but if the Lions offensive line continues to play like this, we’re all in for a major disappointment in the running game.
