Akwa Ibom: URUA NKA Market Traders Protest over Demolished Shops

Traders who were occupants of Urua Nka Market in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have protested over the demolition of the market without alternate marketing avenue.

The traders took to the streets of Eket on Tuesday after the market was demolished to pave way for the proposed modern market to be constructed by the Chinese firm.

Occupants says the demolition came unannounced and that government is yet to issue the newly constructed temporal market to those who are registered owners of shop in the market.

Speaking on behalf of shop owners, Mrs. Ekaette said that “the temporary market built needs sufficient lock-up shops to help them in their daily businesses.

She said that the amount of N1.2m charged for the stores on completion was too expensive for them, especially given the type of businesses most of them do.

Following the protest by traders, Eket Local Government Chairman Frank Archibong hailed a meeting with the traders yesterday at the local government council hall with the Eket divisional DPO, SSS, Secretary of council, councillors, Eket LGA revenue chairman and others, it was a positive lampshade for the traders has a result of the protest under the aegis of Ura Nka Market Women Association, which resisted the directive to move to lock-up stores built by the State House Member Hon. David Lawrence as temporary site.

He sympathy with the women and took upon on him to give them an helping hand. Hon.Frank inform the trader’s that the prices will be pocket friendly, especially to some of traders involved in petty trading.

He also told the traders that the lock-up shops yet at hand is temporary for their relocation so as to commence construction for the new international market, the chairman in that occasion constituted a Five men committee from the traders as their representative.

He also request from the Eket market revenue chairman not to extort revenue from the traders due to the new development at hand and final fix a meeting with the market committee, the investors and Eket LGA.
