Petitions were taken out against Mayor Vanessa Delgado and Councilman Jack Hadjinian following the council's 3-2 decision to approve some commercial marijuana businesses (Councilman Art Barajas, the third vote, has his term end this year). Delgado is running for the State Senate and is blaming Councilwoman Vivian Romero, who is also running for the Senate, for pushing the recall. Romero denied the claim.

Petitioners need about 6000 signatures to get on the ballot and plan to raise $30,000 to hire signature-gatherers.
