Man arrested after explosion at Southgate Underground station

A man has been arrested after five people were injured in a “non-suspicious” Explosion at a Tube station on Tuesday evening.

Police were called to Southgate station in Enfield, north London, at 19:03 BST on Tuesday after reports of “six-foot flames” and the smell of “burning rubber”.

Paramedics treated five people at the scene and transported two to hospital for further evaluation, but no serious injuries were reported.

In a statement, the Met Police said: “It appears at this stage that the cause of the explosion was a battery short circuit. The Met Police and BTP are working together to establish the full facts.”

The cause of the explosion is believed to be a faulty drill battery, and the man is being held on suspicion of an act likely to cause an explosion to injure or damage property, and endangering safety on the railway.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan praised the emergency services for their quick response.
