The U.S. Senate’s Vote Could Make A Substantial Difference To Dementia Patients

Alzheimer’s disease, one of the effects of Dementia, is receiving a lot of attention from the government and medical bodies alike, as it affects more than 5 million Americans. This makes it one of the costliest diseases and has the power to completely bankrupt Medicare. The U.S. Senate recently approved funding of $425 million towards research, which will hopefully find some cure or management system to alleviate the pressure from medical schemes, while at the same time allowing patients to continue their day-to-day lives independently and with dignity. For the elderly, high-cost care can be devastating.

Care Facilities That Make A Difference

There are a number of care Facilities in the Netherlands and Thailand that have been set up to allow those who suffer from Dementia to be taken care of in peaceful surroundings. These facilities are often set up like villages to allow residents to still feel like they have some independence, while still enjoying the safety of care personnel. These destinations are costly and at $8,000 per month, hardly affordable to the average family. While their respective governments may subsidize a portion of the care, there is still a substantial portion that families may need to cover. Care facilities within the U.S. however, are more institution-based, but are also costly and can have a large waiting list.

Caring For Patients At Home

There is a long list of symptoms that carers will need to deal with as Dementia patients progress through the various stages. Powerful outbursts and erratic behavior might require special care, which is when the help of a carer is required. These professionals are trained to deal with behavioral issues and even medical emergencies as a result of the Dementia. Families will need to brace themselves for the costs, however, as a carer isn’t factored into the costs covered by Medicare. Families who are considering taking on the role of carer themselves may have to forego earning an income, plus attend courses and classes to equip themselves better for the role.

Cost Saving Tips That Could Make A Difference

While the $425 million will go into research rather than care, it’s up to consumers to consider cost-saving options to care for their loved ones. Long-term care insurance, savings, and even choosing the right care facility package can make a substantial financial Difference. In some instances, care facilities also offer their patients the option to share a room if it’s safe to do so, which can make a substantial difference in the cost.

Technological advancements and the rediscovery of nature’s super ingredients are all being thrown in a hat together as researchers and developers try to beat the clock for a cure. The sizable financial contribution will hopefully allow these researches to find a cure, or at the very least, treatment that will remove some of the burden of care.
