A nation’s leader has an ass for a son who has no idea that his only success is due to his father’s wealth, connections and influence. Sound familiar? Only this time it is Israel. The leader is Bibi Netanyahu and the son, Yair Netanyahu.
Imperious father, entitled son. The current state of play in politics.
Yair is a drinker — much like another loud mouth scion was at the same age. A recording of him on a night out with his buddies has surfaced. The tape reveals the then 23-year-old liquored up and expressing an affection for prostitutes.
“Speaking of prostitutes, what’s open at this hour? It’s possible the waitresses there go with the flow.”
He then follows up that misogynistic stupidity with the hollow braggadocio of a man who has achieved nothing but win the birth lottery.
“My dad arranged $20 billion for your dad, and you’re whining with me about 400 shekels,”
This piece of petulance was directed at the son of Israeli tycoon Kobi Maimon. And does not help Benjamin Netanyahu, who is at the center of two criminal probes alleging fraud, bribery and breach of trust.
And what is Bibi’s defense of his son’s drunken rantings? He attacks the media. Because as every autocrat insists, the sin isn’t the sin — it is reporting the sin.
The prime minister has called the release of the recordings part of a media-orchestrated witch hunt aimed at ousting him, saying the press had stooped to unprecedented “persecution, bloodletting and shaming,”
To salt the wound, and bring to mind another media hater, Netanyahu has been billing the taxpayers for excessive personal expenses
In 2015, the state comptroller released a report showing excessive spending at the official residence at 2 Balfour St. in Jerusalem. It noted that the Netanyahus had billed taxpayers for 92,781 shekels, or about $24,000, for takeout food in 2011.
Not Trumpian level perhaps, but in Israel it is considered a big deal.
And just in case the image of a conservative leader with a loudmouth son isn’t familiar enough, consider that Netanyahu is beholden to religious fundamentalists for his hold on power. And they have demanded their pound of flesh with religious bills — like the one just passed by the Knesset restricting commerce on the Sabbath:
It grants the interior minister a right to cancel municipal by-laws that currently allow shops, restaurants, cinemas and other businesses in their areas to operate on the Sabbath, or the Jewish Saturday, which runs from Friday at sunset to Saturday at sunset.
And as long as he keeps delivering settlements and supports laws favorable to the ultra-orthodox he he will have the undying support of the religious — no matter how immoral he is.
