Kapil Sharma - The Sub-Standard Indian Comedian

The following views about the comedian Kapil Sharma are not based on short term incidents or his sudden success. For someone who has been born in the 1990s (me), Kapil Sharma's entire career as a comedian grew in front of me. However one of the recent incidents which involved him insulting (again) one of his co-stars (Sunil Grover) did inspire me to write about him.

As it should be, it will be better to begin with a small insight into his background. Kapil was born in 1981 in Punjab. As many times made evident by him, his father was a constable and mother is a house wife. Kapil's rise to fame and the story of his success is nothing short of inspiring. Most of us got to know him because of the comedian prowess displayed by him in the famous show "The Great Indian Laughter Champion". Before participating in this show he acted in another Punjabi comedy soap/show.

Kapil's dominance only grew from thereon. He went from strength to strength only through hard work. Since his debut on the small screen in 2006 the comedian has not been involved in any controversies per say, excluding his tussles with another great comedian - Sunil Grover. Both of these comedians have been involved in controversies twice, together. We'll cover this later in the article.

Just consider this scenario -  consider a man born in a lower-middle income group with mother being a house maker and father being a constable (no solid source of income with another brother of Kapil which the family needed to nurture). The only earning hand, the police constable succumbed to cancer in the year 2004, following which his elder son joined the TV industry in 2006 (those must have been desperate times for sure). The elder son then made his way to one of the then most anticipated and famous comedy shows in the country which was famous majorly because of the judges it had (the elder son was an intelligent man, he held on to both the judges who played major parts later in his success).

Not only did the elder son participated in the show but he went on to win the show. As it is said achieving supremacy and maintaining it are 2 different tasks with the latter being the more difficult of the 2. So the landmark in this person's character was not winning the show but holding on to that fame and en-cashing it. His confidence grew many folds thereon. The next defining moment was when this guy participated in another comedy show aired on one the most famous TV channels in the Indian industry and went on to win 6 seasons of this show (it had one of the judges from the previous show which he conquered).

Kapil was never a dominant personality or a guy who was rude with his co-stars. I believe this was fed to him. The reason? Giving the audiences sides to choose (an underdog and a favorite) can give you huge TRP spikes. The show of which he won 6 seasons, it was there that he was given a king like personality and a similar treatment on set. I am no insider of the industry but the way Kapil was compared with the other guys by the judges soon became the way Kapil himself compared others to him. Comedy converted into sarcasm and sarcasm into humiliation. Anyways, the public laughs at everything.

From a person born in the lower-middle income group to someone who - won 6 seasons of a prestigious comedy show, to getting the Indian of the year award, being selected as the brand ambassador of the Delhi EC, opening face of the all famous KBC (2014), a guest star on "The Anupam Kher Show", being ranked as the most famous Indian TV personality (2016), being ranked 27th in the top 100 celebrities of India by Forbes (2015), ranked 7th and 11th in terms of position and income (2016), to being ranked 3rd in the Most Admired Indian Personality List by ET (2015), Kapil has achieved it all. Looking into his influential personality he was also nominated by the the PM Shri Modi Ji to carry forward the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Other than contesting in many front league celebrity dance shows he also hosted many such shows. Kapil Sharma has been regularly hosting the Oscars of the Bollywood Film Industry, the Filmfare awards with none other than Shahrukh Khan as his co-host (image what wittiness he must have to stand in front of King Khan!). One such example of his intelligence is the way he uses his shortcoming of spoken English time and again to make the audiences laugh.

Who doesn't aspire of getting a chance to be a part of the glamorous Bollywood industry? Kapil Sharma went from being judged by Bollywood celebrities, to hosting them to finally being such a celebrity himself. He acted in a Bollywood movie named "Kis Kisko Pyar Karun" which although turned out to be a dud but nonetheless marked his entry into Bollywood. He isn't a man who's satisfied soon so he went on to produce a movie (Produce himslef!) named Firangi.

All said and done Kapil reached to the prime of his career through the show "The Kapil Sharma Show/Comeny Knights with Kapil". Now this show was being aired on the same channel on which the show of which he won 6 seasons were aired and had one of the same judge/presiding character who was one of the judges on his first ever show (amateur graduates could learn a lesson or two from him on networking!). As a professional personality he left all his co-competitors/friends behind and formed a new team for this show. The show proved to be amazing for a lot of people (including my family) however it had a lot to do with the co-stars he had (majorly Sunil Gorver).

Nobody knows whose idea it was (the best bet is that it was the Creative team's idea) but almost all other performers on the show potrayed their characters dressed as a females. With Sunil Grover's growing stature it was bound that success would claim him. He left Kapil's show only to return to it later. Now what would come next was known to all. Kapil never left an opportunity of making him realize that Sunil was nothing without Kapil and his show. It could never be proved otherwise! Neither Sunil nor anybody could prove it otherwise. This is bound to feed fodder to anyone's mind, Kapil was no exception! I would not hold him responsible here. However soon his ego proved to be the better of him. For those who watched the show, he never treated Sunil the way he was meant to be, like any other of our colleague's are meant to be, and not at all the away one should be treated on National TV. Sunil too had a part to play in this, he allowed it to get too far. It had to be a special effort from Kapil to make Sunil realize that there was nothing like respect left between the 2 stars (this is where his behavior from the  show where he won 6 seasons might have inspired him). Kapil kept on developing like a man who thought he could achieve anything and nobody could stop him. He forgot everyone who rises, falls! If excerpts are to be believed (and not the main stream media) Kapil hurled a shoe at Sunil, insulted him on flight and abused him! Compare this with the chivalry he showcases on his sets. what a waste of 5 years of handwork, with alcohol playing the joker and success the ace.

I believe its time we bid this man goodbye, it could be his best ode to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan!
