Spring Sailing Season

Captain Tony invited us out for a sail on Freedom one fine Spring day.

Capt Tony, also navigator, hull diver, pot washer, engine maintainer, cook, helmsman, rigger, and all the other skills a solo passage maker needs.

Mike and I obliged as crew for the captain, who is entirely un-Bligh like.

You can see that we worked very hard.

And encountered all manner of vessel.

Freedoms is an all steel boat, built down under. Some of the equipment rotates opposite of what we might expect in this hemisphere, but that does not make it bad. For example, the engine has no starter, oh, ahem, excuse me, we can add that to the list of skills for the Capt. (he's the starter), there is a hand crank that you get the motor spinning (with a relief valve open) and then close the relief valve, and the diesel starts. No complicated systems to break. (Unless you break your arm). If you think this is odd, you should see the gear lever...

Long distance sailors have a fondness for anchors. They come in real handy in many routine and a number of non-routine situations. Freedom gladly carries five anchors, with one in the ready position at all times.

This is the position you want your dinghy at sea.

Our course took us around Yerba Buena and Treasure Islands, past Clipper Cove.

And of course the bay bridge construction.

This is a view most locals don't get a chance to see.

I guess the old will come down when the new is done. How many more years?

These two tall ships were making a spectacle of themselves by firing cannon and maneuvering in a menacing manner (with respect to each other). I am sure they were full of tourists for the fun, and attracted a lot of attention from those on the bay.
