A guest unwelcome in my house,
An uncouth vermin, a cute li’l mouse.
It lies there, lifeless
In a moulded box.
The playful hopper on my ceiling,
A poisoned bait it chose for the stealing.
I eased its pain,
With just two sharp knocks.
Pointed ears and beady eyes,
A whiskered snout, the dead rodent lies.
Had to pay this price
For chewing off my socks.
Sad such a young thing lost its life,
It did but cause me a lot of strife.
Now its left for the crows
On a mound of rocks.
But as I left it there on the ground,
My heart felt heavy with fetters bound.
Now I bear my guilt
As my conscience talks.
