5 Toxic Foods for Dogs

Do you like to share Food with your pets?

I am guilty of this myself. As humans, we love to share our food and when you are getting wet nose nudges on your leg as they look up at you with those “puppy Dog eyes”, it’s hard to resist. We’ve all been there!

But the truth of the matter is that a lot of things that we eat aren’t safe for our dogs! I wanted to share a few common ones, and hopefully this will be a reminder next time you resist the beg. There are obviously more than these 5 foods, but here are some to get your started!

Here Are 5 Toxic Foods for Dogs…

1. Chocolate

Now this might be an obvious one, but for a lot of people – it’s not! Why is chocolate bad for dogs (and cats)? Chocolate is made from the roasted seeds of the cocoa tree, and the seeds contain toxic parts. This includes; caffeine and theobromine. These ingredients stimulate the heart muscle and can do some damage!

2. Grapes

Short answer? Grapes have actually been known to cause kidney failure in dogs! Whether its a raisin or a grape, it’s best to keep this AWAY from your dog.

3. Pineapple

Now, in small amounts RAW (not canned) pineapple IS safe for your dogs and actually contains vitamins like B6, iron, and fiber qualities that are great for you dog… but a lot of sugar! I think they can get these benefits from another fruit or veggie without having to have such a citrus fruit or worry about the amount of sugar. Just my 2 cents!

4. Peanut Butter – CERTAIN KINDS!

Yes, Peanut Butter is great (especially in KONGS), but did you know that certain brands contain Xylitol which is extremely toxic to dogs? You have to look at the back of the container and make sure it’s not listed in the ingredients section before serving to your pups! It can cause insulin issues leading to hypoglycemia and could progress to seizures. Better to be safe than sorry! I’ve used Peter Pan Peanut Butter (no xylitol) and my dogs love it.

5. Alcohol

It’s not funny, don’t share with your dog! They get the same effects as humans at a MUCH smaller quantity and it can lead to vomiting, coordination loss, coma, and death. Keep it far away from Fido!

Just remember, if you aren’t sure – just don’t feed it! It’s always better to lean on the side of caution. Your dogs look up to you to make sure they are only getting what is good for them, so we have to do our part.
