Daily antics of the Basset hounds!!

Tags: gate buzzy door

Hello again, today I am going to be talking about some of the amazing, yet stupid things the dogs get up to during their free time.

Our mischievous Basset hounds!

When we got Honey all those years ago, we had her sleeping in the utility room. She was just as curious and mischievous as her future sons. Her first escape was a few months after we had her. Somehow, she managed to squeeze underneath the small Gate. It was like watching a snake wriggle out of a small hole. We did not expect that out of our shy little female Basset!

Normally, Buzzy is the relaxed one in the pack. He sits around a lot and is often left by himself. Bumble is very much a mommy’s boy and so is always with her. When we were first trying to keep the dogs from escaping out of the garden, we had to make sure that all the possible exits in and around the garden were covered up. We were sure that we had everything was ok. It wasn’t until one day when my mom didn’t close the gates properly, and so he jumped onto the gate and somehow managed to get his paw under the part of the gate that keeps it closed.

  • Once he had it open, he jumped on the gate once again and managed to push it open. It was pure luck that my mom’s car was parked in front of the gate so it didn’t open very far. Also, my mom was on her way out to collect us from school a few seconds after Buzzy got the gate open.

The two dogs sleep in the utility room, which has a small yard for them. There is a small gate, keeping them enclosed at night. Buzzy, like his mother, managed to squeeze underneath the gate. As well as that, he was an is still able to use his paw to grab and pull the gate of their small enclosure and open it.

  • He has escaped quite often using tis tactic. At the side of the small enclosure, there is a ramp that we use to get to the back of the house.
  • After a couple of tries, Buzzy was able to jump up onto the side of the ramp, using a stool that we use to get into the enclosure when the gate is locked.
  • So, as a result of this, we had to buy some extra wooden fence pieces to try to block Buzzy’s way out.

In comparison to both Honey and Buzzy, Bumble comes across as a bit lazy and not that bright, but he is very smart in his own way. He inherited his brains from his mom, who, at times, is not the brightest bulb in the chandelier.

The day we found out we had a Basset genius!

It was a couple of months later when we found out that Buzzy is a truly unique dog. He is able to do things that I never seen or thought a dog could do. It was at the weekend when it happened, we were all having our lunch when we heard the front Door opening. We were taking down our Halloween decorations so we left the door open. I thought I closed it properly, clearly I didn’t. A few seconds later, we hear scratching on the kitchen door and padding feet. I go to open the door, and as soon as I open it, the two boys come strolling in. There wasn’t any proof that it was Buzzy who could open the door until later in the week when my sister had a friend over and Buzzy managed to jump on the door after my sister closed it,  pushed down the handle and opened the door. It was amazing to see. What a smart dog!!
