Top 5 cheap UK holiday destinations

The Great British Staycation is at an all time high. Since Brexit, Holiday prices to Europe have jumped more than 35% and the fall in the pound means you’ll get less sangria for your travel money. That’s why millions of us are planning to spend some well-earned time off in our home country. We’re actually very lucky because we have sandy beaches, charming seaside resorts, cool cities, lush green countryside and beautiful villages – so how do you choose where to go? Well, if you’re a bit strapped for cash, it could make things easier because here are Piggy Bank’s top 5 cheap UK holiday destinations…

Cornwall

We couldn’t bear to settle for a particular place in Cornwall (although Bude is a secret favourite!), so we chose the entire county because there’s so much to see and do! Land’s End, the Eden Project, Newquay’s nightlife – Cornwall is one of the most versatile cheap UK holiday destinations ever. Of course, no British Staycation would be complete without a sandy beach. Head to Hayle for rock pooling, Cornish pasties, 99’s and surfing.

Camping: Pentewan Sands is an immaculate family-friendly holiday park available for camping with tents or touring caravans.

Non-camping: Mount Haven, Penzance, is due to reopen at the beginning of June but it’s been completely refurbished and offers a number of luxury rooms at fair prices!

Llandudno

This North Welsh town is a true UK holiday favourite across all ages simply because it’s a gorgeous place and there’s surprisingly so much to do! If you like impressive views, then you’ll love walking up the Great Orme. Or if you’re more into wildlife then go and visit the wild seals at Angel Bay on the Little Orme or the Welsh Mountain Zoo just a short drive down the road. There are plenty of fab restaurants to suit even the smallest of budgets, as well as great bars and live music every evening throughout the town. In the summer, on the promenade, you’ll find entertainment such as festivals, Punch and Judy and much more.

Campers: Tan Y Bryn Farm is one of the most beautiful campsites in the area. Perfect for touring caravans, motorhomes and tents, the farm is home to picturesque views of the Great Orme.

Non-campers: Karden House is an exceptional guest house close to all amenities and guests can expect the highest quality service for a more than agreeable price!

Southport

If you’re looking for a vibrant Victorian seaside town with an adventurous twist then Southport could be perfect for you. It’s especially popular with adrenaline junkie as you can windsurf, sail, paddle and row until your heart’s content. We all know the British weather can be temperamental, so you could always head to the brilliant Southport Splash World for the amazing water slides and relaxing spa. Silcock’s Funland, the amusements at the pier entrance is a must-do for all ages, as well as Pleasureland which is full of roller coasters and the newly built Speed Loop (not for the faint-hearted!).

Campers: Leisure Lakes is the ultimate camping site for literally everyone. Available for caravans or tents, this campsite features so many activities such as paintballing, Segway, cycling, horse riding, fishing and so much more. It’s a five-minute drive from the beach.

Non-campers: The Heidi is one of the friendliest hotels in Southport! It’s right in the middle of the town so you’re mere minutes away from restaurants, attractions and the beach

Barmouth

Often overlooked in favour of Tenby, Barmouth in Gwynedd, West Wales is an absolutely gorgeous cheap UK holiday destination and a hidden gem. Nestled between an impressive mountain range and pristine white beaches on the Mawddach, Barmouth has it all. If you get a bit fed up of the beach, the south-west corner of Snowdonia National Park is a very quick car trip away. There are so many amazing seafood restaurants on the harbour, all serving food caught in the bay! Barmouth is the place to be for beach lovers, surfers, sunbathers and sandcastle builders.

Where to stay:

Campers: Shell Island, a family-friendly beach campsite which is a 15-minute scenic train ride from the centre of Barmouth. Perfect for couples or families.

Non-campers: Bryn Melyn Guest House, situated right near the beautiful harbour and fabulous restaurants, is an incredibly affordable B&B overlooking the breathtaking Cardigan Bay.

North Tyneside

Campers: Sandhaven Holiday Park is a coastal campsite that’s still very close to the buzzing city life!

Non-campers: The full of character Village Hotel in Newcastle is amazingly cheap for a city centre hotel…and it’s close to the beaches and attractions.
