Baby Sign Language!
These are my top 5 essential Baby sign language signs. I am talking game changers! The decrease in major crying frustrated moments that my daughter had, just by doing these simple signs to communicate was HUGE! It was so nice to know “oh that is what you wanted!” A lot better than her throwing stuff or just a big cry fest because we didn’t know what she wanted. Ugh! So please try these out and share with other parents! These signs definitely gave us some much needed “wins” and made for a calmer happier baby! A good age to try baby sign language with your baby is about 6 months old.
Baby Sign language for Please:
To say please you start by placing your flat right hand over the center of your chest with fingers extended. Move your hand in a clockwise motion. Sofia would do this and then point to what she wanted or follow it with another sign. She would even sign for her teething tablets.
Baby Sign language for More:
To say more have your baby bring their thumbs together like they were making an O shape. Then, repeatedly have them bring their hands together touching and then separating. So great to know that they not only like something, but that they want more of it!
Baby Sign language for All Done:
You start with arms up and palms facing in, then turn the hands so that they are facing away. Rotating back and forth. This works great for when your child is done eating or playing with a particular toy.
Baby Sign language for Eat:
Make the sign to eat by taking your hand, with the tip of your thumb touching the tips of your fingers and repeatedly tapping it on your mouth. It looks like you are putting food to your mouth, with your thumb to your fingers.
Baby Sign language for Potty:
make your hand into a fist with thumb peeking out between the index finger and the middle finger. Hold the fist out and shake it around a little. Kinda looks like she is ringing a little bell. This was the last sign my daughter learned. Having your baby learn to start communicating to you about going to the bathroom is the first stage of potty training. Start making the appropriate sign as you change their diaper, when they are on the potty, or if they have an accident. She started her potty training at 15 months and her daycare was the one who showed me the sign for it. They used it with her while she was training to keep it consistent. This was really helpful when we were not at home and she wanted to convey that she needed to use the restroom.
