Following on from our what is Blood experiment we quickly set to work on this blood themed sensory bin. The children always enjoy playing with things like this so it was good to get this setup.
I used the following items for our blood themed sensory bin (affiliate links):
- Red water beads – I used four packets of water beads as this is all I had in, I would use at least eight if I was to do this again. I set these up to soak the evening before so they were ready for us to use
- ping pong balls
- Red ribbon cut into small pieces
I popped all these into a small flexible basket and placed it on the tuff spot with some spoons, dishes, scoops etc for the children to play with. I talked them through the four parts and asked them to tell me what they though each bit represented. They quickly knew that the Ping Pong Balls were the white blood cells and the water beads the red blood cells. A little prompting and they got the platelets as being the ribbon and the water the plasma. I did post a short video to my Instagram to show the sensory bin – I’ve shared it again below:
The children played with this for a good while and have asked for it again over the past few days. It was a really good way for them to understand the components of the blood and almost a week on, they are still able to tell me about the blood and have been more and more engrossed in reading their body books, focussing on the blood section.
