Washi Tape

Get kids involved in the letter-decorating process with washi tape, a decorative material that is quick and easy to apply. Take a shopping trip together to select a few favorite washi tape designs, then apply across the letters in stripes or any other pattern you desire. Leave a little to hang over the edge when you apply the tape; this can later be wrapped around the edge and attached to give the letter better coverage.

Letters look especially impressive if bordered with a solid-colored tape and then filled in with patterned tape. Kids with a flair for design will want to choose tape colors that correspond with their walls, carpet, and bedding. Older children can help you choose corresponding patterns for their younger siblings’ toddler beds, train tables or other essentials.

Glitter

There’s no such thing as too much glitter, especially if your kid adores sparkles. Be sure to put down plenty of newspaper as you complete this project, or you’ll be vacuuming for days. Choose spray paint and glitter in the same color.

Begin by spray painting the letters and allowing them to dry. Dip a foam brush into glossy Mod Podge and cover the entire front surface of the letter with a thin layer. Cover this area with glitter. Repeat on remaining surfaces. Allow them to dry for several hours before covering with a layer of high shine spray.

Photo Collage

A great option for kids who have dozens of friends or family members, Photo collage letters make it easy to display precious memories. All you need are your favorite pictures, a brush, and a little Mod Podge. For added effect, select black and white photos.

Begin by printing your pictures, ideally with a laser printer and not inkjet. Take some time to determine where you want each photo and how it should be trimmed to fit the letter. Using one photo at a time, apply Mod Podge to the selected place on the letter before adding the picture. Smooth the photo to remove air bubbles. Let them dry for at least half an hour before applying one final and very thin layer of Mod Podge to the top.

Comics

Does your child obsess over a specific comic strip? Why not feature favorite comics in letter form? This project largely resembles the photo collage highlighted above, but you’ll need to be even more careful with the Mod Podge, as the newspaper on which comics are printed tend to be more fragile.

Frames

Wall letters look magnificent on their own, but you can easily up the ante by surrounding them with large picture frames. Choose contrasting colors for the frame and the backdrop, or opt for one in a solid color and the other in a snazzy pattern. The letter is the centerpiece, of course. You can decorate the letter with any of the methods outlined above, or simply cover it with fabric. Either way, your DIY framed art will tie your child’s room together.

Whether framed, striped or used as a means of displaying photos, large letters make the perfect centerpiece for your child’s room. You’ll quickly discover that a little creativity and a lot of Mod Podge can go a long way.
