I never could relate to someone hating me for being “the fairest of them all,” so while I loved Snow White as a little girl, she wasn’t my favorite.

And I may have dreamed of having a fairy godmother come along and transform my plain clothes and hair into something magnificent, I realized I either didn’t have a fairy godmother or I had one who was pretty laidback in her duties… unless maybe she stopped me from stepping into the path of a speeding car at some point and I just wasn’t aware of it.

I wanted hair like Sleeping Beauty’s, but I was absolutely terrified by Maleficent turning into a dragon and saying “all the powers of hell.”

I grew up on Disney princesses, but I hadn’t really found my princess.

Until Belle came along.

Belle might be the most relatable princess, especially for girls who felt a little out of place. The way the townspeople treated her was familiar(though more the “strange” and not as much the “but special” part of that song). Her love of books when I never went anywhere without one(and still don’t). Her bravery and kindness seemed attainable. And while of course, like all Disney princesses are, she was beautiful, the storyline played more to her heart than to her outward appearance.

Add the songs to all that and Beauty and the Beast was then and still is my favorite Disney movie. I’m pretty sure I wore out my VHS copy of the movie, though it may still be in one of the cupboards at my mom’s house, all these years later.

All of this is why I’m so very excited to see Beauty and the Beast when it comes out on March 17th.
