The most important tool EVERY blogger should have is an email list

Email lists are SO important for your blog to succeed!

When I first started blogging a few years ago, I knew the importance of an Email list. I knew that in order for my blog to succeed, I would need to put the time and effort into my email list. I had read numerous posts and had taken some courses that talked about how and when to start your email list, and why it is so important for bloggers to do so.

Whether you are new to blogging or have been blogging for some time, I’m sure that you have heard what other bloggers say is important to your blog. If you’re like most bloggers, you probably have taken one or two blogging courses, looked for tips, information, and resources to make your blog successful like the others you have read about. Well, trust me, I was no different. All of us want to be successful bloggers, and to find out ways that will help us achieve our blogging goals, no matter what they are. One of THE most important things you can have for your blog is an email list. But why?

So…WHY are email lists so important?

Email lists are important in so many ways. If you ask any established bloggers what their biggest regret was when first starting their blogs, I’m pretty sure that they will say it was not starting and building their email list properly from the beginning. By beginning I’m talking Day 1. As in, before your blog launches. Once you actually launch your blog, you should already have a plan of action in place to start building your email list.

I’ll be honest with you, I had my plan in place before my blog launched, and I thought I had a good plan to build my email list. Boy was I wrong! My first mistake was not choosing the best email service provider. At the time I thought it was a good choice, but I soon found out it was not. Secondly, I did not take advantage of the benefits of building my email list strong from the beginning. Yes, I had a plan, but I let the ball drop when it came to actually executing my plan. Let me tell you, that was a BIG mistake on my part! If I had to do it all over again, I definitely would have done a better job with following through with my plan to build my email list correctly from the start.

Why an email list if you have social media?

This is something that gets asked a lot. Social Media is important, but making and building your email list is more important; and it should be your top priority!! I don’t want you to think that I’m saying that building your social media following is not important; it definitely is. I do however want you to understand how important building your email list is, even more important than building your social media following. Why you may ask? To put it simply, your social media accounts and profiles are on a platform that you do not own. At any time, the platforms could decide to shut down your account, shut down completely, and even worse…they have the authority to decide if, when, and who sees your content. They have complete control over your content, and with the ever changing algorithms, it can be hard to keep up and keep a consistent following. Social media platforms can limit your content so much that the only way to get it seen is to spend money on boosting your posts or promoting them. If you’re a new blogger, this may not be something you have in your budget to spend consistent money on; plus there are better ways to spend money on your blog.

So, what’s the solution?

Devote time to build something you do own…your email list

Devoting the time in building your email list has many advantages. People spend tons of time building their social media following on a platform that they don’t own, why not put that time into something that you do own?
