GDPR Last Minute Guide for Bloggers
What is GDPR?
General Data Protection Regulation comes into force on May 25th 2018. This is the first big change to how data is collected in over 20 years. So carry on reading for my Gdpr last Minute Guide for bloggers.
So have you left GDPR to the last minute?
Me too! Now as I am a new blogger it hasn’t given me too much of a headache, as I currently don’t collect personal data.
But there are things I have had to implement to make sure I am compliant going forward.
Register with the ICO (Information Commissioners Office)
If you process personal information and process the information electronically. This only costs £35 and only takes 5 minutes to complete.
Cookie Plugin
On your blog make sure you install a cookie notice plug in. There are a number you can use, but I use Cookie Notice by dfactory. It is very simple to set up and all you need to do is activate it.
Privacy Policy
If you don’t already have one, get one! It explains to visitors to your site what you do with their personal data. Here is a link to mine if you need some guidance.
Mailing List
Now luckily I didn’t have one, but you will HAVE to get people to opt in. I advise emailing your existing mailing list and tell them how great you are, and why they should continue to receive your emails. If they haven’t opted in by May 25th you will have to remove them from your database.
All mailing lists must have a double opt in enabled, and should be very clear what the subscriber is actually signing up for. (link to your privacy policy in this email).
Blog Comments
You need to disable the required fields for ‘name’ and ’email address’ in your comment boxes. It will still appear but it can’t be a required field.
Site Backups
This should be done regularly and the previous backups should be deleted.
Opt in Freebies
Rather than offering a freebie in return for them signing up, you should call this a welcome gift when someone subscribes to your newsletter. If you don’t you will not be able to email them again, as they only consented to the freebie and nothing else. If you subscribe to my newsletter there is a free email template for you to send to your existing subscribers.
I hope you have found this GDPR Last Minute Guide for UK bloggers helpful. If you would like to subscribe to my newsletter please see below. Your welcome gift will be an email template to send to your existing subscribers.
