On Messy Play

Happy St Patty’s day everyone

Making a mess is an essential part of childhood. Incorporating rich textural experiences to their daily routine, gives children the opportunity to manipulate and refine their senses while exploring their world. The richer the experience, the richer their cognitive and language will develop.

Here are some other benefits of messy play:

  • Encourage creativity
  • Builds gross and fine motor skills
  • Basic concepts: dry vs wet, hot vs cold..etc
  • Sparks other senses
  • Encourage spontaneity, discovery, experimentation and exploration
  • Explore math concepts such as mixing and measuring
  • Cause and effect
  • Independence

And more…make play limitless

Today, we used our senses to explore and manipulate green slime for St Patty’s day!

All you need are 2 ingredients you can find in your kitchen!

  • cornstarch
  • dish soap
  • food colouring optional – the slime will take the colour of the dish soap but if you want to you can add more food colouring for a brighter colour

The amount of each ingredient is up to you depending on how you want the consistency to be! Use more Dish Soap than cornstarch if you want stickier slime!

Although some parents may shy away from an activity like this, I do Encourage you to not be intimindatee by the mess..it will actually keep your little one engaged longer than any toy! The clean up took me 5 minutes honestly, Chase was just so fascinated by the texture, he has never felt anything like it, and seeing him so amazed and curious was timeless.
