Right around 300 BC Aristotle noted that travelers going south see southern constellations rise above the horizon, thus providing observational evidence of an Earth that is spherical in nature. Pythagoras taught us that the Earth was a sphere in 600 BC. Ptolemy used common sense and observation to map a spherical Earth, defining longitude and latitude in the year 140 AD.

All of this information has been trampled amongst the ruins of war and hatred. The fall of the Roman Empire was a catastrophe to knowledge and to a civilization that became lost. Throughout the Middle Ages civilization was lead to believe in a philosophy that the world was flat. Thanks to the long tentacles of the Vatican the world population had no way of knowing they were in error. There was just no true knowledge available during the inquisition. The truth was buried in the minds of the knowing.
