Should You Search for a Job Around the Holidays? Or Take a Break?

That is the question. Many job seekers take a break from job searching during the holidays. It’s a crazy time of year, and it can be a challenge to juggle shopping, family visits, cooking, etc while keeping a job hunt moving forward.

Contrary to what you might think, hiring doesn’t stop during the holiday season. Employers hire when they need new employees. A slower holiday season for some businesses means more time for hiring. Not sure whether you should call it quits until the New Year? Here are some reasons to keep your job search going during the holiday season:

  1. Companies ARE hiring! Keep looking at those job boards on a daily basis (Indeed, LinkedIn, Monster, Career Builder, Craigslist)
  2. More Networking Opportunities. Isn’t this the best time of year to be talking to people? And probably the easiest! There are many social functions at companies where you can engage with others who can help you with your job search. Don’t be shy or nervous. Most people are thrilled to be able to help others out, especially around the holidays! Make sure you make the most use of connecting online too!
  3. Salary and Benefits are in place for the New Year. What a great way to start off the New Year….with a new salary and benefits, right?! It definitely helps with budgeting and tax planning!
  4. You may be able to negotiate start dates. With the holidays, you can most likely extend your two week notice. Most companies are closed for periods of time in November and December, so take advantage! You could get more time with your family!
  5. Extra Money for the Holidays! If you get hired before the holidays, you could see your paycheck in time to buy some more gifts, or pay some bills! You’ll feel more at ease not being so stressed.
  6. Employee Discounts for Holiday Shopping. Especially if you are in hired in retail, employees usually get great discounts! Take advantage!

Don’t miss out on great jobs because you have decided to stop your job search. Even if you cut back your job search activities and spend less time you’ll still be positioned to get hired – and it’s always better to get hired sooner rather than later!
