Learn SEO with Games of Thrones

Game of Thrones is a fantasy fiction novel written by George R.R. Martin which was made into a TV show. With the Hype of the final season of Game of Thrones airing, I thought now would be a good idea to learn some basic techniques of Search Engine Optimization using Game of Thrones. You may think, there is no way there are any parallels but you’d be surprised.

Search Engine Optimization or SEO for those that don’t know is a popular method most websites use to rank higher on the various search engines. As the name suggests it is a way to optimize your website (or web page) to make it easier for the search engines to know what they are looking at and for. To help you understand the methods of Search Engine Optimization we are going to look at Game of Thrones and try and learn from them.

Knowing What to Say (Content Marketing): How far do you think Tyrion Lannister would have survived in the world of Game of Thrones if he wasn’t able to use his words to save him? Tyrion is known to be of quick wit and often times it is his silver tongue that saves him more than his physical bravado. He has risen from a lowly position to one of power only because of his ability to speak well and speak to whom it matters.

“Content is King. Content is where I expect much of the real money will be made on the internet”

-Bill Gates

Content is king. Knowing what your target audience wants to read, where when and how, is one of the most basic principles of SEO. There is so much you can do with content to increase your position on the Google search engine page.

Connections Matter (what is back-linking): Every character of Game of Thrones gets by on their powerful connections. Sometimes even more important than what you know is who you know. Powerful alliances make for stronger kingdoms. Especially in the cruel world of game of thrones where everyone is ultimately looking for their own benefits but needs to make connections in order to succeed. Something similar needs to be done to improve your website ranking. You need to have links coming to your website from trusted web sources to increase your page authority and domain authority. Back-Linking is absolutely essential but also very hard to achieve.

“The connections economy thrives on abundance. Connection creates more connections. Trust creates more trust. Ideas create more ideas.”

– Seth Godin

Connections are not made easily, but working on this is essential for your website and is an integral part of the SEO technique.

King of the North (Titles): Every character from GoT loves a good title (I’m looking at you Daenerys). Everyone wants to be King of the North. Ruler of Westeros, Hand of the King and they fight dearly for it. It’s because titles are important. Title tags to be more specific. This is again related to the content strategy of your website and the keyword research for your website. It is important to mention appropriate titles for your blog and other posts. The title of your blog, the alt tags you give to your photos. You need to have title tags for all your posts because the google web-crawlers are looking for them. But they need to be connected to your content. You can’t just claim to be king of the North and then not have the backing of your people or you will fail.
