3 people in Mumbai who rose from ‘Rags to Riches’

There are many people in this world who have not been born with a silver spoon, have started with nothing and yet managed to rise to the top through sheer hard work, self-belief and a bit of luck. Below are some of the ‘rags to riches’ stories of inspiring people of Mumbai who overcame all odds to mark their name in the pages of history. More than anything, they have earned it to live in beautiful homes in Mumbai.

PREM GANAPATHY – FOUNDER OF RESTAURANT CHAIN, DOSA PLAZA

Born in a very poor family in Nagalapuram, Tamilnadu, and a class X passout, Prem Ganapathy moved to Mumbai at the age of 17, upon a fake assurance of work from an acquaintance. He was robbed off by the acquaintance and was left stranded in Bandra, Mumbai. He then started earning his bread by washing dishes at a local bakery for a monthly salary of Rs 150. Over an year, he managed to start his own food business of selling idlis and dosas on a handcart opposite Vashi railway station, with the money (Rs 1000) he saved. Soon, he began earning profits and rented space in the same locality and named it Prem Sagar Dosa Plaza where 105 dosa varieties are sold. Gradually, the Dosa Plaza gained popularity and a total of 43 franchises were set up in other states of India, New Zealand, Dubai and Muscat raising its present capital to Rs 30 crores from Rs 1000 in 1992.

SURESH POOJARI – FOUNDER OF RESTAURANT CHAIN, SUKH SAGAR

Suresh Poojari hails from a small village named Padukone in Karnataka. Over five decades ago, he moved to Mumbai at the age of 10. He initially started working in small eatery stalls for just Rs 4 per month. In the year 1962, he started his own food joint by the name Sukh Sagar (meaning Ocean of happiness), which serves a variety of vegetarian snacks and fresh fruit juices. Sukh Sagar today manufactures food items like namkeen, sweets and ice-creams.

Sukh Sagar, thus, became popular and presently has 22 branches – 8 in mumbai, 7 in Bangalore, 1 each in Mysore and Chennai, 2 each in Dubai and Qatar and  1 in Saudi. Poojari is now doing his part to the society by feeding the underprivileged children and providing education to them as a part of his CSR activities.

ARSHAD WARSI – INDIAN FILM ACTOR

Born in 1968 in Mumbai and orphaned at an age of 14, Arshad Warsi rose from a door-to-door salesman to film actor. He did all types of jobs like selling cosmetics in buses and as an  assistant in photo studio to keep himself alive.

He won the Indian dance championship in 1991 and World dance championship in modern jazz category in 1992. Later on, he started a dance studio by name ‘Awesome’ in Mumbai. Thus, he became a popular choreographer which brought him into the film industry. Starting his film career in Amitabh Bachchan’s production film in 1996, he got many more offers and gained fame for the role of Circuit in Sanjay Dutt’s Munnabhai MBBS movie which was released in 2003.

Thus, Mumbai, rightly called the city of dreams, is a place where you yourself can either make or break your future.
