Matthew Vaughn in talks to direct Man of Steel 2

Once again it seems the DC Extended Universe is in flux as Man of Steel 2 is back on the drawing board.

Zack Snyder had shot down discussions of Man of Steel 2 as he claimed that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was the sequel to Man of Steel. Talk of another Superman solo film seemed to be dead with Justice League on the way and the other members of the team getting their own films.

Now it seems that Warner Brothers is in early talks with Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class, Kingsman: The Secret Service) about taking the helm. Apparently the talks aren’t at the deal-making stage yet, but even if this doesn’t go through the studio is said to be high on the idea of Vaughn directing some film in the DCEU.

This could be the shot in the arm that is needed for the series. Many people have stated that the DCEU is too dark and serious, and it seems that Vaugh would prefer to see a lighter film. Speaking to MTV in 2010 during the development of Man of Steel, the director told MTV“I just hope they don’t make it too serious. I think that’s the one thing not to do with Superman, trying to do the serious ‘The Dark Knight’ version. Superman is about colour and fun, or it should be, for me.”

What a novel idea: Superman in bright colors, like he should be.

I haven’t enjoyed Snyder’s take on the character and a lot of that comes from how much of a downer Superman is. The character stands for truth, justice and the American way, and Snyder’s character is just a constant downer and was even a hobo for a bit. (Nothing against hobos… that just isn’t Superman.)

It’s time for someone else to take over helming these projects, and I think Vaughn is the man for the job.
