A Much Better Day

Today was cold but sunny. Everyone I hear from complains about the cold but I prefer it to high heat and humidity, just as long as the sun is shining. The sunshine lifts my spirits. And the biting insects are not out yet.

I was up late last night reading, and finished After You, by Jojo Moyes.

This morning I read two more chapters of the Maud Lewis book aloud to Toad. Poor Toad said that he could not sleep all last night, just lay in bed. I thought that listening to me read might put him to sleep, and he did beg off to lie down at the end of the second chapter, but still was unable to sleep. In fact, he has been unable to sleep all day today and has been extra talkative.

I was looking up hairstyles that I might want to try and mentioned to Toad that my brother's oldest granddaughter Courtney (now a mother of three children!) had had her hair streaked with purple and pink not long ago. I showed him her photo on Facebook. He couldn't get her relationship to me straight and was puzzled. He finally seemed to accept that she is my niece (to keep it simple) but still seemed puzzled. He said that the name Courtney sounded familiar but he didn't know why. I reminded him that he has a granddaughter named Courtney and he said "I do? I don't remember." So sad.

Skyped this afternoon with my brother and heard about our uncle's funeral yesterday. Bro was glad that his company left today. It was good of him to host five of the cousins for the past several days. He was in a good mood, so when a friend from Ontario called our phone I asked her to call back later. When I got off Skype I called my friend and she wanted to call me, as her calling plan doesn't cost her to call anywhere in North America, so she did. I told her about the shitty day yesterday and she commiserated with me. She's known Toad for over twenty years and is sad that his mind and body are deteriorating. Just as I began to get dressed for public viewing I had a phone call from my grandson GC, using his mama's cell phone. I love to hear his sweet little voice talking to me on the phone. My daughter said that she had had a horrible day with the boys yesterday and vented to me about that, and then I told her about the shitty day I had had yesterday. The boys were playing nicely today and having fun. They had all slept well last night and what a difference that makes!

One story she told about yesterday was that GC had been acting awful and had even bit his brother. D attributes his bad behavior to lack of sleep. Neither of the boys wanted to eat their lunch but GT managed to eat enough to satisfy D, so she told him that since he ate most of his lunch he could have a treat but that GC could not have one because he had been acting mean and hadn't eaten. D asked GT what he wanted for his treat and the sweet little guy said "For [GC] to have a treat, too." Even though his brother had been mean to him GT loves him so much that he wanted him to have a treat, too.

Had to buy dog and cat food, as we were totally out of both dry and wet food, so I drove us to the grocery. I stopped first to check our mailbox, and was rewarded with a bill. Toad sat in the car while I went in and bought a few groceries for us as well as the pet food. Toad wanted another donair, saying he was sorry that he left his where the dog could (and did) eat it Friday night, and assuring me (unasked) that he would put what he couldn't eat tonight in the refrigerator and that he would give none to the dog.  So I stopped to order us each a large donair on the way to the grocery, and picked them up on the way home. After we got the groceries and pet food in, and I put it away and fed the cats and Foxy, we each ate part of our donair. Not one morsel for Foxy!
