If you eat out a lot, as most folks do these days, you've probably noticed that Waitresses come in about four categories.
One is that Young perky cheerleader type with blonde hair pulled back in a ponytail and a big smile for everyone. You can tell she secretly thinks you are old and weird and wonders why are you eating all vegetables. Handsome young men get her best efforts and you know she is just waiting for college classes to start again. Every time she passes she asks if everything is all right, but when you are ready for the check, she has disappeared to check her make-up. You leave her a big tip.
The second type of waitress is the older, bitter woman, who has waited tables for 25 years and would rather be hanging out the back door smoking. Her appearance is straight out of Alice's Restaurant. Her hair is bleached blonde and her nametag has seen many cafes. Her voice is loud and raspy; she plunks the food down hard on the table, spilling your water. Men eating alone get better attention and she calls them"Dear" and "Honey," but ignores your waves and beseeching looks. Someehow she shows up with the check as you swallow your last bite and says, "Come back now, ya hear." You leave her a big tip.
The third sort of waitress is short, overweight and barely able to navigate. She is somebody's grandmother, and her legs aren't what they once were. She can't read her own writing with out extending the ticket at arm's length. You feel sorry for her and leave a big tip although she brought the wrong order, spilled coffee in your lap, and dropped your salad in the floor. You just know she is going to have the big one before she gets your dishes back to the kitchen.
Then there is the Waitress. Attractive enough that you wonder why she is waiting tables, she is dressed neatly, takes your order without having to ask three times, gets the food right, brings the steak sauce and the check right on time. If you are a regular, she knows your name, what you drink and whether you want to talk. She is pleasant, but not familiar, and doesn't worry you to death with questions. She gets an outrageous tip.
Don't even get me started on waiters. These are just observations on waitresses, not criticisms. I appreciate what a demanding job it is, and always leave a tip.
