When a woman goes Weak in the knees, or weak at the knees, she’s said to be overcome by a strong feeling, usually a good one. It might also mean to be overcome by a strong emotion.

This could refer to men, but I generally relate it to women.

Often, it’s women in love who “go weak in the knees”. In other words, they’re about to pass out. Very similar to swooning.

But I’ve reversed myself on this one. I’ve learned from experience: a woman who goes weak at the knees… is often wearing high Heels.

Very high heels.

Now, I’m one for heels. But VERY high heels? Not so much.

The other day, I donned a pair. A terrific taupe with white ankle trousers, a distinct departure from my usual black, black and more black.

“You look 20 years younger!” a friend exclaimed.

How old did I normally look? I wondered.

“I’ve never seen you in white! What an outfit!” another spun me around.

Who knew?

Yet, I’m no dummy. To get to and from the event, I wore flats. Just to make sure. Because these shoes were… did I mention… HIGH?

So I thought it over and ensured that I was not hobbling nor bobbling to or from said event. Only hobbling once there. For approximately 1.5 hours. Which was apparently about 1.45 hours too long.

My knees hurt.

I felt weak in the knees.

Literally.

And there was no love interest nearby.

I was not swooning. I. was. hurting.

But, in any event, said event ended and I departed in my flats, happy to be back to normal. My little toes hurt for a couple of days following, but that was the price of beauty.

No, actually it wasn’t.

Three days later, I wore my usual heels, high enough, yet not stilettos. More of a chunky and comfy high heel. And I was still in pain. And a couple of times, no, make that many times over the course of the day, I felt my knees buckle.

I could barely walk. I could barely even stand.

I was weak in the knees and it wasn’t due to love.

Just wanted you to know, in case you one day feel weak at the knees and think it must be love.

Maybe not. Maybe it’s just a pair of tremendous taupe heels that you should have broken up with before you ever took the first step.
