gone to war

And so it goes, Baseball season up North has begun for my husband.  I spent an hour putting his schedule into all of my calendars.  Yes, I have several:  google Calendar, filofax calendar (yes, I still carry one), my blackberry calendar, my “family” calendar that sits on the back of the kitchen door, our shutterfly family page calendar, and of course, last but not least, I put it into an email for my mother.  You’d think someone would make this easier.

You’d think he was off to war.

Really, what’s the difference?  He did say something like “we got killed.”

So and so didn’t pitch so well today. Neither did his relief, or his relief, or even the reliever after him.  I don’t think it was a good day.  Lots of wind, soggy grass, poor playing conditions.  And I didn’t go to the game.  How horrible is that?  I sat here, at my computer “working” looking at the Clock strike 3:30 (ok, ok, it’s a digital clock and it doesn’t really speak clock).  Game time.

Each minute away from the Field was torture for me.  All I could think about was how was I going to explain why I didn’t show up for the game with the kids.  Nine innings later.  Three texts later.  Dinner dishes away.  Kid #2 in bed, asleep?  Kid #1 playing COD.  (How annoying that game is when you are not involved in the action.  Kind of like not going to a baseball game and not knowing the score.) I get the update.

By the way, Comcast Sports Net updated the Red Sox vs Pirates score on Facebook.  A little too much I might add.

His first text came in at 6:37 PM.  It wasn’t good news.  I get a pit in my stomach this time of year.  Waiting, patiently to get the score.  Waiting to get a phone call.

And now, I am left with a wounded General.  He will review the battle in his head a thousand times.  He will dissect every inch and every minute that took place.  He won’t leave it on the field.  He will bring it home.  I, as his mistress (sounds much better than wife), will greet him and care for his wounds.

He has to do it all over again, wait, need to check my calendar…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………tomorrow.

Back to the battle field.
