99% of the Women are molested or sexually abused in some way.
The UN says at least one in three women will be beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime.
Women between the ages of 15 and 44 are at greater risk from rape and domestic violence than from cancer, traffic accidents, war and malaria.
Women make up more than 80% of trafficked people.
Up to 130m women have been subjected to genital mutilation
All these statistics makes you wonder in which world you live in. Has anyone stopped to wonder why these atrocities are committed against women? Why our societies have not progressed and we are still stuck in the stone ages. Women are the weaker sex; does it give men a sense of power to subjugate women to these atrocities?
Honour killings, I came across this term about a decade ago. Girls were being killed because they brought shame to the family name. What did the girl do so bad that the family killed her? The girl fell in love. That’s why the men in the family got together and decided that she had no right to live. I don’t see stories of men being killed because they brought shame to the family.
Genital mutilation better known as circumcision is performed on a girl so that the girl’s virginity is intact. And a man can be sure that he has a pure wife. All this is done by men in the name of religion. When they circumcise a girl, they make sure she can never enjoy sex; child birth is harder and sometimes dangerous for the life of the baby and the mother. But men want virgin wives no matter what they have done in their life. Why do the women have to prove their virginity by undergoing trauma? Why can’t that man be happy that the woman they are marrying is going to be with them and only them for the rest of their lives? I don’t see men undergoing any kind of test to prove their virginity. But women have to; at least Asian and African women have to.
I read an article about this British man, who raped his daughters repeatedly and they had 19 pregnancies. What kind of father does that to his own child? Yes the argument here would be that it is a rare case. But we know it’s not rare. Many women are molested and raped by members of their own family. The people who are supposed to protect them are the one who are committing the abuse. Where does a girl go from here? Men don’t realize while molesting a girl of 4 that she can never get over it. She might move on with her life, but it stays with her for life. At various points in life it will come back to her and I will never let her live a completely free life. She will worry about every man in her life; she will worry about her children and her grand children. She will always live in fear. Growing up I was taught to be careful with how I carried myself, how I was not supposed to attract attention to myself etc. If a man whistles at me, I was taught it was my fault because I must have done something to make him whistle. This kind of thinking is prevalent in the Indian households. A girl is made to believe it’s her fault if a man does something wrong. Who does a girl go to when she is abused, when she actually believes its her fault?
In all walks of life a woman has to fight just because she is a woman. She is abused and punished because she is a woman. Where do we find safety? Where do we find peace and not be targeted because we are the fairer the sex. Being the weaker sex aren’t we supposed to be taken care of? Being bearer of children aren’t we supposed to be cherished?
