Think you know your cat? Think again.

Cats are the most popular pet in the US today and hugely popular in almost every other pet loving country in the world. Despite this, there are still amazing facts about them that I bet you didn’t know.

What is a group of cats called?

Yes I know cats are solitary creatures, but when there are several together do you know what the collective noun is for them?

Its a CLOWDER of cats. Yes really (ask Alexa if you don’t believe me)!

Every cat’s nose is unique.

Yes just like a Human fingerprint each cat has a unique pattern on their noses. I’d like to see the first person brave enough to attempt to take a cat nose print though.

Cats sleep way more than you do

Yes your cat always appears to be sleeping – that’s because they actually spend two thirds of every day asleep, that’s 16 out of every 24 hours. This means that the average 6 year old cat has been asleep for 4 years!! Mind you we humans will have been asleep for 2 of those 6 years as well!

Cats’ miaows

A cat Miaows – we all know that. But did you know recent research suggests that cats develoved different types of miaows to communicate directly with humans? If you ever see a group of cats together they don’t miaow at each other (unless they’re about to fight and then that’s a totally different sound), but we recognise several different miaows our own cats make. The one for ‘I really need to go out now’ is different from the one that says ‘Feed me now.’ That’s evolution for you.

Cats can’t taste sweet things

How often have you felt sorry for your cat with that never ending diet of the same old same old tinned meat or kibbles? Well don’t because cats have developed to not have any sweet flavour receptors on their tongues, so anything else would be a waste. That’s not to say they won’t eat sweet things (mine likes licking yoghurt pot lids), but they aren’t tasting the sweetness.

How do cats sweat?

Do they sweat? Well yes they do but not like humans who have sweat glands over their entire body, but through their paws – yep their paws!

Cats have amazing kidneys

Yes cats can filter salt out of their kidneys so are perfectly able to drink salt water without harming themselves. Which would be super useful if they were stranded on a drifting boat at sea. They’d outlive you anyway!
