Detroit Realities #772

The Detroit Auto Show had a 4-hour quiet period (no music, loud sounds, or bright lights) for the 0.8% of the population that has autism – and perhaps half of those are sensitive to sensory input.

Detroit Police have released surveillance photos of the Mercedes that was involved in a drive-by shooting that killed a 3-year-old in a Minivan from a few days ago. The family was on their way to see a “Sesame Street Live” at the Fox Theatre downtown Detroit.

Detroit Police arrested two men on 8 Mile Rd. and Groesbeck for shooting at police officers. Three men began running when they spotted patrol officers, prompting the suspects to shoot, the police returned fire, but no one was hit.

On Detroit’s east side, residents say there are no street lights – combined with hundreds of abandoned home, and they do not feel safe.

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • A drunk man broke into the Detroit apartment of a 29-year-old woman who fought him off with a metal lid. He was damaging her property and was arrested.
  • A double shooting by 7 Mile Rd. and Evergreen resulted in one fatality. Two men approached at car at a stoplight, asking if they wanted to buy drugs. The driver tried to speed away, but his tires spun on the ice, allowing the two men to both fire shots into the car. The passenger was shot in the head and died instantly while the driver was hit in the leg.
  • A taxi driver dropped a woman off at a Detroit home. She said she’d be right back with the fare, instead, a man came out, pointing a shotgun at the driver. He drove away and called 911. Once Detroit Police arrived, he barricaded himself inside the home for 2 hours.
  • A man was walking along Detroit’s Saratoga Ave. when a car pulled up, fired several shots at him, but thankfully, only struck a finger. Police are using surveillance photos to track down the shooter.
  • A man’s body was found in an alley off 7 Mile Rd. and Wyoming. It appears he had been murdered with a sharp blow to the head. The Wayne County Medical Examiner is investigating.
  • A Detroit Police Commander was breathalyzed after a car accident and arrested for drunk driving; he tested nearly twice the legal alcohol limit.
  • Maybe the Detroit Police should follow a Missouri Police Dept.’s effort – they just plead on FaceBook with criminals to,  “Keep their criminalling to a minimum because it is too cold for us the next 3 days.”
