Detroit Realities #703

Two kids were in a car in Detroit and their father was leaning against the car when another vehicle pulled up alongside. The other car had 2 shooters that opened fire; killing the father and both kids were shot but are likely to survive.

Just north of Detroit in St. Clair, police are searching for 4 men as part of a bottle-return fraud ring. They make counterfeit receipts and turn them in to large retailers for cash – stealing hundreds of dollars each time they hit a store.

The Detroit Public School System has been struggling for 2 years to fill hundreds of teaching vacancies. The board polled stakeholders and learned a few things:

  • Parents = 40% would not recommend DPS as a place to work
  • Teachers = 50% would not recommend DPS as a place to work
  • Staff = 63% would not recommend DPS as a place to work
  • High School Students = 50% do NOT feel safe in school

What kind of parent would live in Detroit, let alone place their kids in the dangerous public school system where so few graduate?

Oh Kwame. Kwame Kilpatricks’ good buddy in 2007 was Barack Obama – but President Obama wouldn’t pardon him. Now Kwame is asking President Trump for a pardon. Let’s see, Kwame owes Detroit about $8 million in restitution and the IRS another million for extortion, racketeering, wire fraud, and abuse of power – good luck getting a pardon when you refused plea bargains and still haven’t had a moment of contrition or remorse. It is more likely that Kwame will be sent to Gitmo!

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • A Detroiter was arrested after smashing his car into a police cruiser, both officers needed the Jaws of Life to be removed from the vehicle. Both officers are in stable condition.
  • On 7 Mile Road, shotgun-armed thieves robbed a liquor store. The team of three 20-year-olds had a lookout, cash register looter, and shooter.
  • A Detroit woman shot a house guest in the thigh and then hid in a nearby vacant home. Police found her and arrested her; the victim is in stable condition.
