Detroit Realities #636

Convicted corrupt trash magnet, Chuck Rizzo, was instructed to have no contact with witnesses while he was on bond. Rizzo was caught trying to intimidate witnesses and had his bond revoked. Text messages that Rizzo, along with his father and brother, found a witness to meet up with him. Rizzo will be sentenced next month and he could get 10 years.

Detroit quietly passed a ban on Airbnb rentals in many residential areas that went into effect yesterday. Nobody knew about it until they were notified by AirBnB. Many AirBnB hosts are upset because they rely on the income to stay in their home. The ordinance was hidden in an emergency zoning action by the planning commission, not normal City Council business where the public can comment. The Detroit Planning Commission won’t comment on why the ban was put into place, leading some to speculate that people were bribed by hoteliers. But wait – a day later, Detroit now says it won’t enforce the AirBnB ban! This capricious and amateur nonsense is exactly why NO business moves within the Detroit city limits.

A former Michigan State Trooper, Mark Bessner, failed to appear in court for a lawsuit. Bessner has been charged with second-degree murder for the death of a 15-year-old Detroiter when the officer tazed him as he was driving an ATV at speed, and crashed once he was paralyzed by the tazer.

And finally, in “It is a Darwin move to be anywhere near Detroit” news,

  • A 7-year old girl was in the lunch line at a Detroit elementary school. The boy behind her had a lighter, ignited her hair, and then blew it out. When the girl wanted to call her mother about it, she was refused and told to sitdown. The mother is furious – if I had put some product in her hair, she could have 3rd degree burns. The school says there is no proof, but her hair is clearly burned and there were several witnesses who all told the same story.
