With the Easter school holidays coming up, it’s time to put our thinking caps on over whether we are going to stretch to a weekend, or longer, away or perhaps even stay home. With incredible game parks and beaches on our doorstep, it’s almost criminal not to explore the country. Good news; centrally located Nairobi is a fantastic jumping off point for visiting anywhere in this stunning country either by car or by air. Bad news, as soon as you leave the driveway, it tends to be expensive.
We can choose from residents rates offered at up-market, fully catered lodges that include game drives and alcoholic drinks in their packages, to self-catering in equally stunning locations – albeit without any hand holding #driveyourowncar #spotyourownleopard.
Same goes for the coast. Swanky (read: pricey) hotels offer a luxury stay but a self catering cottage without air conditioning (fans only) still gives you access to the exact same white sand beach and balmy Indian Ocean and costs a fraction of the price. However, some costs are unavoidable. Park fees can be steep, so worth factoring these in at the outset.
Camping is a very good option for the intrepid and fearless (but still strikes the fear of god into me) and it’s worth factoring in rain at Easter. On the few occasions that I’ve camped, I have to admit that any discomfort is more than made up for once you emerge unscathed (TV, sofa and a hot shower never felt so good). Over the years we’ve splashed out on Lewa Conservancy (twice!), stayed at the coast, camped, braved KWS bandas in Meru and self catering houses in Naivasha (mixed results) and stayed home (however, 4 straight days at home can seem long, so worth organising things to do to break it up). The new African Forest zip line is definitely on my bucket list for this holidays.
