Tattoo Exhibit at the Field Museum

From now until April 30, an amazing Tattoo-centered exhibit is featured at the Field Museum. And you should go. Whether you’re an aficionado or you’re just going because your child decided to get tattooed, there’s something for everyone. The inclusion of Tattoos as a historical art to be showcased in a world-renowned museum does amazing things for the craft. The times are a changing. When I’m at my university’s gym, every person in there seems to have some ink on their body. The Tattoo exhibit works to explain the beauty of tattoos to those (looking at you older generation) who don’t quite ‘get it’, and to explain the cultural relevance of the ink so many of us (millennials) have splashed across our bodies.

It’s a great place for inspiration for new art, but be sure not to commit the sin of cultural appropriation while you’re finding your next tattoo.  Maori tattoos are dope, but don’t be a poser.

They even feature real-life (as opposed to cyborg) tattoo artists who will ink people right there. They have their licenses and everything. It’s gnarly. Check the schedule here. They’ve had some fantastic people like Lance Lloyd from Taylor Street Tattoo (2 from there, 1 from him) and they have Jennifer Trok in February from Speakeasy, where I got my first tat.

I’m in love with every part of this museum. If you like art, history, or just badass stuff, go see it. You’ll leave more cultured.
