Evolution is a challenging idea for many. I encountered a challenge to my world view at the schools where I taught. Many fundamentalists were among my lunch discutees. One said that evolution was a myth. Right the Greek gods, Rip Van Winkle, Turtle Island possibly Jesus, there is some evidence he is a fabrication of the Emperor Constantine, and evolution. But it doesn’t make sense. There is a theoy of evolution. the evidence was in the playing Field, dandylions that grow to be flat and crinkly in the field where it gets mowed and tall ones that grow among the weeds where there is competition for sun and bees. One of my fellow teachers once asked me why there aren’t any half cat and half dog. i didn’t know how to answer that, or what kind of skewed ideas of what evolution was. I explained that evolution is a change gradual from one form to a similar form. They both came from the same ancester, and are similar as furry predators. It would be unlikely to have a half and half because whatever produced a dog was different from what produced a cat. It was also evident in the neighborhood in the pictures of school classesthat adorned the walls that showed a change in ethnic groups. How do you evolve your response to a growing number of immigrant children as they Americanize themselves. I was with the band director at the Natural Historry Museum on a field trip. He told me he beleived in the bible. I showed him the place where they had images lined up showing all the stages of evolution. I said they could likely show you fossils from almost all of those just from what they must have stored here at the museum. He agreed that they probably could but he was still going to stick with the bible. Evolution appealed to me from the beginning. i had no religious upbring. I only remember my mother praying once when I was sick and my father didn’t believe and I rejected beleif right away by about age 6 or 7. It seemed more logical with the proof before your eyes rather than unsubstantiated belfief. I even told evolution stories to my son. All in all we are just well-evolved biological machines and that is that.
