It’s Thanksgiving Day……i didn’t know

It’s Thanksgiving Day……i didn’t know

That’s right.  It’s Thanksgiving Day and I didn’t know.

How could that be???

Well, in one way it’s simple…….Thanksgiving Day isn’t really celebrated on the Caribbean coast of Mexico.  Yeah, there are a few upscale restaurants that that will advertise and prepare a Thanksgiving meal for us Americanos, and gouge us on the price.

But, that’s it.  Walmart will fill their open-air freezers with frozen turkeys and turkey breast.  And there’s an endcap with cranberry sauce and then I can rummage thru the goodies down each aisle piecing together a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner.

But, there isn’t anything here to tell me it’s Thanksgiving and there’s no ‘Black Friday’ here…..although there is a shopping period of I believe 3 days (last weekend) that’s before the American Thanksgiving when the prices on gifts are discounted.  It’s called ‘El Buen Fin’, The Good End.  I don’t exactly get it but……it’s an interesting time.  Not all Mexican’s can participate due to their economic status.  Here’s an interesting side to this seasonal sale:  A store Soriana’s (multi-department store) had a sign hanging 54 inch brand TV on sale for $10, 495 (pesos, about $563 U.S.) and there was an error on the sign. The comma was missing and a decimal point was in its stead…..$10.495 (pesos….  56 cents U.S.!!)  The country has a law for prices to be stated in ‘pesos’ and it must be honored.  GADS!

Back to my topic, Thanksgiving Day.

I’m being wished Happy Thanksgiving on my social media sites, in my messenger, and from family……and I’m wondering, “have they lost it!” Thanksgiving Day is tomorrow!

I actually engage in a slight argument concerning Thanksgiving Day and for a moment, I was winning.  I was winning until the calendars came out!

It’s Thanksgiving Day……i didn’t know

By the way, I know the I in my title is supposed to be capitalized, it’s just my way of expressing a low voice.

In my defense on not knowing that it’s Thanksgiving Day, I’m a tad under the weather.  And the medication has me a bit disoriented and in slow motion.

So, what’s my agenda for the years Thanksgiving Day?  I’m going to Chedraui (grocery store) and buy a whole cooked chicken.  Look and see if there’s some sort of interesting side dishes in the deli and look for a can of cranberry sauce with the pull-top lid (that’s rather popular down here), restock on some cold medicines and come back to my room for the feast.  I’ll surprise Deedee.

Other than that, maybe go sit out by the pool with a book to get a little sunshine and fresh air while reading. And, oh…….no booze.  None yesterday either!

I’ll get over it, don’t be too concerned.

That’s the length, height, and depth of my celebration for this obscure holiday…..at least in Mexico.

The big deal on the heels of Halloween is Christmas.  That’s when the Christmas holiday decorations are put up and the Christmas music starts in the stores.  BUT!!!!!  When Christmas day gets here, you wouldn’t know it.  Everybody is doing their everyday thing here…….working.  Taking care of the tourist.  Last year not one person wished me a Merry Christmas (Feliz Navidad)…..and only one person I recall returned my Feliz Navidad!!!

Strange.

Most of you though would love to come here and spend a week for Halloween, “Dia de los Muertos” Day of The Dead.  It’s an all-out Party!!

Not having the festiveness of Thanksgiving and Christmas is the main reason I wanted to spend that time in the states…..I’ll be there for Christmas.

It’s Thanksgiving Day……i didn’t know

Next year I’ll be in the states for the holiday season, this year I’ll have to survive with a cooked chicken.

Live from paradise!!

Peace, love, and beaches,

John
